Psalm 68:6 God makes a home for the lonely; He leads out the prisoners into prosperity, Only the rebellious dwell in a parched land. (NASB)
In the beginning…These words convey the hopes of a story that will bring love to a hurting world. Genesis takes us on a journey through the creation of the world. God looked at everything He created, and He said all of it was good. All creation was good except for one thing. We see that one thing in Genesis 2:18 “The Lord God said, it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” From the beginning, God created us for community. We were not meant to be alone. Today’s society leaves many lost in loneliness. God never leaves us, but people certainly do.
Matthew 28:20 “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
In the beginning…A loving couple grows old together. When the husband passes away, the women wallows in the loneliness of their empty home. As time passes, fewer and fewer people visit the widow. Her aches and pains keep her housebound. She longs for human interaction. How is God calling you to help her loneliness?
In the beginning…A family living half way around the world gives birth to another child. Soon, the family is overwhelmed by rising cost and lost jobs. The only way for them to survive is to sell a child to a factory or a circus. The boy runs away and lives on the street. No one cares whether he lives or dies. He does not remember what loves feels like anymore. He longs for the love of a family. How is God calling you to help his loneliness?
James 1:27 “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress.”
In the beginning…A family moves to a new community. The children enroll in new schools and struggle to make friends. They eat in the school cafeteria by themselves as the other kids snicker and point. The children long for friends and to make connections. How is God calling you to help their loneliness?
James 2:8 “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
The world is full of lonely people, and they are waiting for someone to reach out to them. God wants us to be that someone. God calls us to love our neighbors, and one way to start is to visit the lonely, share a smile and some conversation. You might even make a new friend in the process.
Romans 12:10 “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
