A Simpler Way – Today’s blog by Yvonne
As a child, I loved to visit my granny in Belfast, Northern Ireland. My mum and I would spend several weeks at her house most of my summers growing up. She lived in a traditional row house on a cobbled stone street not far outside the city center. The bungalow was small and lacked many of the modern day conveniences. Granny’s house lacked an indoor bathroom, but she did have an outhouse in the back garden area. We bathed using a bucket of hot water boiled on the stove top. I felt like I was on an adventure every time I visited. My granny remained in that house until her passing in 1975.
One of my favorite memories revolved around the daily delivery of milk. Early each morning I awoke to the clop, clop, clop of horse hooves coming down the lane. The clank, clank, clank of the glass bottles rattling would rise to my room signaling the milkman was near. Granny retrieved the fresh milk quickly before the birds could peck through the top to enjoy the cream. She carefully placed the filled bottles in the shadow of the dining table to keep them cool since she had no refrigerator. These sweet memories are like balm to my soul.
Sometimes, these memories feel like a dream world. It is hard to imagine that a mere thirty years ago people still lived without fridges and indoor plumbing in Europe. Now, electronics and modern technology dominate our world. Even when we visit far away lands like Nepal and Myanmar, we find cells phones and computers are everywhere. Families can barely afford to put food on the table, but they own the latest and greatest cell phone.
Today’s verse reminds me not to focus on my stuff. It is not about how much I own. Instead, it is about what I do with what God has given me. God gives us choices in life. We can choose only to indulge our desires, or we can use some of our resources to reach out to help others. There is nothing wrong with buying things; we just need to remember to share with those in need. God blesses those who provide for the needy as seen in Proverbs 11:25 “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” Our world is full of needs, what can you do today to help someone?
