A Damaging Ice Storm

The National Weather Service issued the first winter storm warning of the year. The notice included the threat of the dreaded freezing rain. Road conditions would quickly deteriorate as the temperatures fell. A few hours later, the twenty-degree drop in temperatures signaled the beginning of the storm. We hunkered down with a roaring fire burning to chase away the chill.

I watched helplessly as the tree limbs sagged under the weight of the building layer of ice. I prayed for the trees’ survival. Each tree appeared draped in icy diamond beads. A quiet beauty shrouded the city in sparkling crystals. The picturesque scene hid the dangers of the ice-clad world. The incredible beauty mixed with astonishing hazards. Only the warmth of the sunshine would reveal if the trees survived the damage from the ice storm.

Psalm 147:18 (NIV) He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.

The frozen trees gave me a snapshot of many people in our society today. The world is full of hearts encased in ice which are bending and breaking under the weight of sin. A frosty soul becomes hidden beneath a superficial charm. Only the warmth of God’s word will help melt the cold heart. But how does the Son shine spread and warm the lives of others?

Romans 10:15 (NIV) And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Matthew 28:19 provides us an answer to the question, all of us are responsible for sharing the Gospel. Sharing the word of God will help melt the hearts of our family and friends. We can pray for those still lost in the chill of their sins. We can share our stories with others, allowing God to warm the soul. We can let the Holy Spirit kindle the roaring fire within our spirit to share the Good News.

Matthew 28:19 (NIV) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

The ice storm of sin weighs down many people today. God is calling you to be a part of the thaw.
