“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Romans 12:2 ESV.

Have you ever noticed how commercials impact our lives? If I said, “my bologna has a first name,” most people could finish the slogan with no problem. Some might even sing the song. And how many more such slogans could we recite from memory? Also, each year, sport fans gather to watch the Super Bowl. Because of the size of the audience for the game, many advertisers roll out their latest and greatest ads. I know they will show new and wonderful commercials during the game. But how do these TV and radio commercials make us conformed to this world instead of transforming us to the way God calls us to live?
Have it Your Way Commercial
A fast-food chain developed the slogan of “have it your way” back in the 70s. The slogan made people realize they did not have to settle for what they offered. We could pick and choose how we wanted it. This attitude carries over into our faith. We want to pick and choose the parts of the Bible we follow. Sharing the gospel with our friends, helping the needy all sound good, but they are not things we are comfortable doing those so we order our faith without them. God tells us He wants us to do it His way. Matthew 16:24 (NIV); “Then he said to them all: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
Just Do It Commercial
A sporting goods company came up with this slogan in 1988. The words in the commercial encourage us to just do that thing we want to do. The message also implies that we should do the things that make us feel good. But not all things in our faith walk will feel good because they go against the ways of the world. God does not call us to follow the worldly ways and just do what makes us feel good. He calls us to do things that make an eternal difference. Micah 6:8 (NIV); “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Things Go Better Commercial
This drink company slogan began in 1963. They want us to believe that life will be better if we just add their product to our daily lives. The commercial shows we will be more popular, more successful, and better people when we consume their products. Our faith tells us the best to have in our lives is Christ. Trails and tribulations will find us even with this company’s product and even with Christ in our life. But our faith shows us the benefits of trusting our days to God. John 16:33 (NLT); “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Instead of looking to the world for their ads on how to live a good life, we can turn to the word of God to find the answers. We can hold key verses in our hearts for those times we struggle with wanting more from life. The Bible can teach us the ways to fulfillment as we learn these Biblical slogans for our lives (all are NIV):
- Hebrews 11:1
- Romans 8:28
- Philippians 4:13
- Romans 6:23
- John 14:6
- Proverbs 3:5-6
- 1 Thessalonians 5:18
- Romans 12:12
- Psalm 46:10
More and more, the messages of this world call us away from the best God offers us. The only way to conquer their voice is to replace them with the voice of God. Search His words, pray for God to show you the right path, and go to church in fellowship with others. When we fill our minds with Christ, He will crowd out the world for us.
Pray

Father God, today I set my heart and mind on pleasing you. Please help me break away from the snare of people pleasing and listening to worldly advice. And help me stand strong against criticism and learn to walk in love always. Help me learn your words and hide them in my heart. Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to You always in Jesus’ name. Amen. Hebrews 9:27.

What an original and innovative way to present the difficult subject of discipleship Ms. Yvonne. By contrasting what God’s Word says vs. what “this world” encourages to believe draws a stark contract between being righteous or worldly. I think there’s lots of folks who much prefer the ways of the world, even in their churches today. Well done author!
I think you are spot on JD. So many people want faith on their terms. Some day we will all realize the error of our ways and thinking. Many blessings
So true! I used to lament (when I first had kids and had NOOOO clue what I was doing) that there wasn’t a great how-to guide on how to raise kids right in the Lord… then I realized the Bible had ALL the info I needed. Today, I find it’s the same for every aspect of life. God’s word tells us what to do so we can safely ignore the slogans of this world.
The Bible is our best source for living a life of faith. It does indeed tell us all we need to know. Now, I just need to follow it better. Blessings
“But not all things in our faith walk will feel good because they go against the ways of the world. God does not call us to follow the worldly ways and just do what makes us feel good. He calls us to do things that make an eternal difference.” Wise words, Yvonne! Thank you for sharing these thoughts.
Thanks so much Melinda. He wants us to faithfully follow Him in every way possible. Blessings
Hebrews 11:1 is my favorite. Thanks, Yvonne. God bless!
Thanks Nancy. Blessings
Yvonne, you are right about those commercial slogans sticking in our minds. You’ve given us food for thought and a reminder to keep God’s word in our minds to guide our paths. Thank you.
The world (and Satan) can so quickly distract us from the path of live. We have to stay connected to the source each and every day. Thanks Katherine. Blessings
Yes, those commercials slogans stick in our minds. Today, I find myself singing children’s cartoon show theme songs. I’m thankful we have the Bible to read and find guidance in every situation. 🙂 We don’t have to rely on commercials about products that may distract us from following God. Have a blessed day! 🙂
So true Melissa. I listen to lots of kids stuff now too. Much better for my mind. Blessings
Yvonne, I love how you used these commercials to turn us to the truth. I only wish God’s “slogans” stuck as easily in my mind as commercial slogans.
Me too. God has so many great slogans. Thanks Annie. Blessings
I love this so much, Yvonne. I enjoyed your trip down memory lane with familiar commercial slogans. 🙂 Yet, this is so true about commercial faith among believers and the church. We need to guard our hearts and hear God’s voice loud and strong as we ask the Holy Spirit to help us drown out the noisy world around us.
So true Karen. These are the kind of things we must guard our heart against every day. Blessings
