A Mighty God

We took the family to visit Niagara Falls. The sheer magnificence of the view across the falls left me speechless. I felt the earth shudder beneath my feet as I stood gazing down at the Horseshoe Falls. The rushing water thundered past me as it plummeted to the river below. I felt insignificant as I stared in awe at God’s creation. I recognized the strength of my God at that moment. He is a mighty God.

Our adventures continued for the next few days. We rode the churning white waters at the bottom of the falls in the Hornblower boat and got soaked in the process. We took the Aerocar over the swirling whirlpool at the bend in the river. And we walked along a path next to the river as we witnessed the incredible strength of the category six rapids.

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.

1 Peter 5:6

A Mighty God

From the trail, I spotted a rock near the edge of the rapids and noticed a small tree clinging to it. Turbulent waters raced past the tree as it held on tightly. The stone and the sapling seemed like the current would engulf them at any moment, washing them away forever. I watched earnestly. I felt a sense relieve to be standing on firm ground instead of clinging to a rock in a raging river.

God provides us with a firm foundation against any problems life gives us. Sometimes, He may calm the waters, but other times He will soothe our hearts. Click To Tweet

But isn’t that how we live our lives? Troubles and trials surge around us and threaten to swamp us at any moment. The COVID-19 virus threatens our way of life for a long time to come. Many people wonder where to turn during these troubled times. What can we cling to until the turbulent waters recede? Just like the river rock I witnessed, I can hold onto our Mighty God. He is our rock. We can cling to Him in times of trouble.

Our Rock

Unlike the stone I observed, Jesus will never get overtaken by the raging waters. He provides us with a firm foundation against any problems life gives us. Sometimes, He may calm the waters, but other times He will soothe our hearts. Either way, the safest place to be during a storm, is with our roots sunk deep into the rock of our salvation. Cling to Jesus.

But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”

Luke 22:69

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, you are my rock and my strength. You are a mighty God. When troubles arise, help me to cling to you only. Calm my heart and strengthen my faith to trust in You all the days of my life. Amen.

Great piece, Yvonne! I love spending time in nature because it is such a great reminder of how big God is and how small I am.

I’m so thankful I can cling to a Savior who will never move! Thank you for this reminder today.

  3. When we visited Niagara the second time, we took our youngest daughter, the only one who hadn’t been yet. We drove across Ontario and viewed everything from the Canadian side. Her reaction is one I will never forget. She caught a glimpse of the rapids from the parking lot and ran toward the fence to view it better, laughing for joy all the way. The river swept around the corner and tumbled right over the horseshoe edge right before our very eyes. The incredible beauty of God’s handiwork inspires joy that bubbles up from our unguarded selves. He is truly miraculous and his wonders are glorious to behold. Thank you for sharing this today.

  4. Your trip sounds amazing. While I’ve never been to Niagara Falls, I visited Victoria Falls when I was in Zimbabwe. So beautiful. I remember we wore rain coats making our way up through the wooded area because the mist was like drizzle on the path. And rainbows over different places in the falls from the mist at various times of day. So thankful God calms the waters, and other times soothes our hearts.

    1. I would love to see Victoria Falls one day. I am sure it is just as spectacular. God’s creation is magnificent just like the glory of our Father. Thanks Karen. Stay safe and God bless

  5. Such deep spiritual lessons you have shared from this trip! I am always overwhelmed at God’s majesty, beauty and power as displayed in His creation. Niagara Falls is no exception. It is breathtaking. I love that you point out, though Jesus is higher than any stormy water that swirl around us, sometimes He calms the sea, sometimes He soothes our hearts. Both are miracles.

  6. This virus is, in some ways, affecting us all, sickness or not. I mean, everything has changed because of it, and I know people are becoming very weary of the “safer-at-home” edict. Many want to return to life as normal, but I wonder if it will ever be “normal” again? Certain things must permanently change, I think. I know God is working on the hearts of His people. Bless you!

  7. Your words give me comfort: “He provides us with a firm foundation against any problems life gives us. Sometimes, He may calm the waters, but other times He will soothe our hearts.” No matter what God is always for us. He is always doing what is good for us.
